245 Product Development Group is a Jacksonville, Florida based new product development consultancy focused on creating intellectual property. We help clients navigate new product development by leveraging our experience in industrial design, engineering, prototyping, manufacturing and program management to deliver for our clients. We drive projects from clean-sheet to successful launch.
Product innovation is more than providing an interesting sketch or solid model, but it is breaking new ground & developing new intellectual property. When choosing a firm to partner with ask who is going to complete the work for your product, ask what has this individual done in the past. If they have held high-level positions in a product company before consulting you know that these individuals can share their experience with you. If not, then you are paying to train them.
After an innovation has been conceived, a seedling of a new idea or invention, it is then time to complete the work to CREATE. Creation is the thoughtful development of a product from the idea stage to tangible deliverables that work through the details of a product. Tasks that could be completed in this phase of development are marketing research, industrial design, engineering, prototyping, and/or creation of manufacturing document package.
Once a new invention has been conceived, true innovation has been forged, and the product has been developed through industrial design & engineering it is time to COLLABORATE. What is your typical design process?
Our typical process is to begin with an idea and start by completing ideation and research. Next initial designs are created by industrial designers and engineers for the client to select from. Prototypes can be built to test concepts or new technical items at this point, if needed. Once a product direction is set with marketing and technical requirements defined final design is completed. With final engineering and ID complete, physical prototypes can produced either for functional testing and/or aesthetic sales models. -
Do I need to have a patent before I can begin?
Not necessarily, but it certainly is a good idea to meet with a patent attorney first if you are new to product development. We sign mutual non-disclosure agreements [NDA] with prospective clients before discussing your invention. It is important to understand if you should seek IP protection and what avenues are available.
A patent in itself is not a magic pill. We can help you understand what questions to ask and even refer you to very accomplished attorneys. A well written patent can be very valuable, and a poorly written patent can be worthless. Hire the best patent attorney you can afford.
